...The way I cut the glass with a hammer and often a chisel generates shapes and form unique to glass and obsidian. In intimate dialogue with the material this action of intention releases its true nature and form. Cairn is virtually all edge, showing the colours and the feathering of the fracture. All the razor sharpness has been ground and polished with care. Cairn balances the raw and the refined…. the lethal razor sharpness of glass with a smooth and tactile surface and prismatic radiance.”
Danny Lane was born in Illinois in 1955 and educated at London's Byam Shaw School of Art and Central School of Art and Design. Lane is renowned for his mastery of stacked and fractured glass, creating monumental sculptures and functional objects that challenge conventional perceptions of this fragile material.
His work is held in major collections and public spaces around the world, including the Victoria and Albert Museum and Microsoft to name a few. Lane's art explores the contrasting properties of glass—its strength and fragility, transparency and opacity—creating pieces that transform how viewers experience space and light.
